Please Support the Hoy Por Ti Mujer Women's Shelter

In May 2013 I traveled with a group of 9 other university students to the cities of Lima and Arequipa, Peru through the Global Youth Volunteer Network‘s Global Team Program.

While in Lima we stayed and worked in San Juan de Lurigancho, Lima’s most populous district, where the majority of the population lives in poverty and has limited access to healthcare.

Our first task was to strip and paint a small industrial kitchen to be used by the volunteers and residents of the Hoy Por Ti Mujer women’s shelter to make nutritious soy milk, breads, and pastries.

The kitchen is used as a teaching grounds whereby the residents of the shelter can learn employable skills to help them support themselves when they leave. The foods produced are donated to local children with disabilities with the aim of alleviating malnutrition.

Hoy Por Ti Mujer  is a completely volunteer-run nongovernmental nonprofit women’s shelter that typically houses 1-6 women and their children at a time. The aim of the shelter is to protect women and their children and help them break the cycle of abuse.

The soy bakery initiative has been having trouble raising the funds needed locally to operate. Therefore, it is my goal to raise $1,500 by March 1st, 2014 to donate to the initiative. To do this I will be contributing 10% of Della Ruth Vintage‘s gross sales from now until March 1st, as well as collecting direct donations at my pop-up sales, but I will also need your help.

If you are able, please consider donating directly to the cause via PayPal by clicking the donate button. Additionally, I will accept donations of vintage salable goods locally (100% of the sales from these items will benefit Hoy Por Ti Mujer).

Thank you for your support.

- Della
